Fantan Fishing provides engineering support inside OEM programs: we take a buyer’s specification or reference rod and turn it into a blank specification, a guide-system drawing, a reel seat and handle layout, and a controlled set of documents that bulk production can be checked against. This page describes the scope of that support and how it runs. It does not list equipment or completed projects, and every parameter described here is confirmed with the buyer per project.
Blank specification
A blank specification defines the blank before any component is fitted: rod type, overall length, number of sections and joint type, transport length, power, action, line and lure rating or test curve, material class and layup, and tip and butt diameters. We work from three starting points:
- Buyer specification: you supply the full parameter set and we review it for manufacturability and consistency before quoting.
- Reference rod: you supply a physical rod; we measure it, document the result and propose a specification that reproduces or adjusts it.
- Target brief: you define the application, market and price tier; we propose a specification for your review.
Blanks can be supplied as a component in bulk through our fishing rod blanks program or built into complete rods through fishing rod OEM.
Taper and action development
Taper and action are developed against the brief rather than chosen from a fixed list. The process is iterative: a proposed taper is built as a prototype blank, compared with the reference or target description, and adjusted. Power, action and taper terms are defined with the buyer at the start so that both sides describe the sample in the same way; our rod engineering guides explain the terms we use. Where a project requires measured deflection or load data, the method and acceptance values are agreed per project. We do not publish performance conclusions that have not been tested.
Guide-system engineering
Guide systems are engineered with our in-house frames: carbon fiber frames in the YT, KW and KR series, and titanium frames in the T and TRA series, each available with ZrO2 or Si3N4 rings and matching tip-tops. The engineering work covers:
- Frame series selection by rod type, price tier and brand positioning. Material statements for titanium frames (alloy grade, corrosion behaviour) are made only against material certificates or test reports.
- Sizing using the H, L, L1 and tip-top dimensions listed in our guide catalogue, matched to blank tip diameter, reel type and line type.
- Spacing and guide count laid out on the actual blank, confirmed on the sample and recorded as positions from the tip on the drawing.
- Thread, finish and colour matched to the buyer’s branding brief.
See carbon fiber guides, titanium guides and the guide-system selection procedure for details, or the parent page on fishing rod guide systems.
Reel seat and handle development
Our own reel seat range is small and is described precisely: YT-01 to YT-06 are carbon fiber reel seats, and YT-07-1K and YT-08-1K use braided 1K carbon. Where a project calls for carbon-fiber-reinforced nylon seats, a grip-and-reel-seat assembly or a branded seat specified by the buyer, these are sourced to the buyer’s specification and integrated; we do not describe sourced parts as in-house products. Handle layout (fore grip, rear grip, butt cap, lengths and materials) is drawn together with the reel seat position and confirmed on the sample. See carbon fiber reel seats.
Drawing and specification management
Every program carries three controlled documents: the rod specification, the assembly drawing with guide positions and handle layout, and the bill of materials listing each component, its source and finish. Revisions are numbered and dated, and the approved sample is tied to a specific revision so that bulk inspection has an unambiguous reference. This documentation is the basis of sample development and approval and of quality and inspection.
Prototype iteration
Prototypes run in numbered rounds. Each round has a defined purpose (blank action, guide layout, cosmetics, packaging), a list of changes requested, and a record of what was changed. The round that is approved becomes the golden sample for bulk. The number of rounds and the sample lead-time are quoted per project within the fishing rod OEM process.
Start an engineering review
Send your specification, drawing or reference rod details through the inquiry form. If you are assembling a specification for the first time, the fishing rod specification guide lists the fields we need, and the RFQ templates described in downloads are supplied on request.
