A guide system is the complete train of guides on a rod: the stripper guide nearest the reel, the transition and running guides and the tip-top, each defined by frame series, size, ring material, position on the blank and finish. This page explains how Fantan Fishing selects and confirms a guide train for component-only and complete-rod OEM projects. Full dimension tables are in the guide catalogue and on the carbon fiber guides and titanium guides pages.
Frame series: carbon fiber and titanium
We manufacture two frame families in-house:
- Carbon fiber frames in the YT, KW and KR series, with matching carbon tip-tops.
- Titanium frames in the T and TRA series, with matching titanium tip-tops.
The choice between them is normally made on price tier, target market and brand positioning rather than on performance figures: we do not publish weight, sensitivity or strength comparisons between frame types unless tested in a project, and statements about titanium alloy grade or corrosion resistance are made only against material certificates or test reports. Within a family, the series is chosen by frame geometry and height relative to the blank and reel, using the catalogue’s H, L and L1 dimensions.
Ring material: ZrO2 or Si3N4
Both frame families are offered with ZrO2 (zirconia) or Si3N4 (silicon nitride) rings. Ring material is specified per project according to the line type the rod is designed for, price tier and the buyer’s positioning; if different ring materials are required at different positions, state this on the RFQ. Frame colour and finish options are confirmed at quotation.
Selection conditions
A guide train is selected from these RFQ inputs:
- Rod type and reel position: spinning, casting, fly, surf, boat, carp, feeder or match rods place the reel differently and need different stripper sizes and frame heights.
- Line type: braid, monofilament or fluorocarbon and the diameter range, which affect ring size and ring material.
- Casting weight or line rating: the lure or casting weight range, line class or test curve the blank is rated for.
- Blank dimensions: overall length, number of sections, tip diameter and the diameter at each proposed guide position.
- Action and taper: where the blank bends, which determines spacing between guides.
- Commercial inputs: target price tier, market, frame colour and any buyer-specified branded component.
From these we propose guide count, frame series and size at each position, ring material and spacing, recorded as positions from the tip on the guide-set drawing.
Tip-top sizing
The tip-top is specified by two sizes: the tube diameter, which must match the finished tip diameter of the blank, and the ring size, which should be continuous with the last running guide. Sizes for each series are listed in the catalogue. Buyers of guide sets should confirm the blank tip diameter by measurement, because tip-top fit is checked at incoming and assembly inspection.
Sample and drawing confirmation
No guide train goes to bulk from a list alone. The confirmation sequence is:
- A guide-set drawing listing each position with series, size, ring material and distance from the tip.
- A guide sample set or, in complete-rod programs, a sample rod with the guides fitted, built to that drawing.
- Buyer review, requested changes recorded as a revision, and a signed sample approval.
- The approved drawing and sample become the reference for bulk, as described on quality and inspection.
Two supply paths
Component-only: guide sets are supplied in bulk, packed per set or per size, to rod builders, manufacturers and brands who assemble elsewhere; the buyer owns the blank data and layout, and we supply parts to the agreed drawing. Complete-rod OEM: the guide train is one part of the rod specification, selected and fitted by us within the fishing rod OEM program and inspected as part of the assembled rod. The selection logic is the same; the difference is who owns layout and assembly.
Guide-system RFQ
To quote a guide system we need: rod type, blank length and sections, blank tip diameter, line type and rating or casting weight, preferred frame family and series if known, ring material, colour, guides per set, number of sets, and whether a sample set is required. The Guide-System RFQ & Sample Approval Form collects these fields and is supplied on request via the inquiry form; its contents are described in downloads. See fishing rod guide systems for the range and the rod engineering guides for technical background.
