A fishing rod specification lets a manufacturer quote accurately, build the right sample first time and inspect bulk production against a fixed reference. This guide lists the fields a complete specification contains, why each matters, how to submit it to Fantan Fishing, and how it becomes an assembly drawing and bill of materials for fishing rod OEM or component supply.
What a complete specification contains
Each missing field becomes a question before quotation or an assumption in the sample. The table shows the fields we work from.
| Field | What to state | Why it matters |
| Rod type | Spinning, casting/baitcasting, fly, surf/beachcasting, boat/offshore, carp, feeder, match/float, travel | Sets guide layout, reel seat type, handle format and the rating system used |
| Length | Overall length in feet/inches or centimetres | Drives blank taper, guide count and packaging size |
| Sections and joint | Number of sections; spigot, put-over or other joint type | Affects blank construction, action continuity and ferrule inspection |
| Transport length | Maximum packed length | Determines travel formats, carton size and freight cost |
| Power | Power class and the scale it follows | Power terms differ between brands and markets; the scale must be defined |
| Action | Fast, moderate, slow or a reference rod | Defines where the blank bends and how the taper is developed |
| Line / lure rating or test curve | Line weight range, lure or casting weight range, or test curve as used in the target market | Fixes the load the blank is designed for and the figure printed on the rod |
| Blank material and layup class | Carbon, glass or composite; modulus class and layup as specified or to be proposed | Primary cost driver and the basis of material statements on the product |
| Guide system | Frame material and series, ring material (ZrO2 or Si3N4), guide count, tip-top size, colour | Second largest component cost; see guide-system selection |
| Reel seat | Type, size, material (carbon fiber, braided carbon, carbon-fiber-reinforced nylon, grip assembly) or a specified brand | Determines reel fit, handle diameter and whether sourcing is required |
| Handle layout and materials | Fore and rear grip lengths, material (cork, EVA, carbon, other), butt cap, split or full grip | Affects balance, cost and the appearance buyers judge first |
| Finish | Blank colour or natural carbon, gloss or matte, thread colours, metallic details | Sets the cosmetic acceptance criteria |
| Branding | Logo artwork, position, application method, model name and rating text | Artwork files and placement must be approved before sampling |
| Packaging | Protective bag or tube, label, hang tag, retail box, carton quantity | Packaging is inspected as part of the product and affects freight |
| Target market and regulatory notes | Destination countries, required markings, label language, documentation | Supplied by the buyer and built into labels and packaging |
| Quantity and schedule | Quantity per model, number of models, target delivery | Needed for MOQ, pricing and lead-time |
How to submit a specification
- Choose the format: a completed RFQ template, your own specification sheet, a drawing, or a reference rod with a list of changes. The Fishing Rod OEM RFQ Template is described in downloads and supplied on request.
- Send it through the inquiry form, selecting complete rods, blanks, guides, reel seats or component integration.
- Expect questions. We review the specification for completeness and manufacturability and return a question list before quoting.
- Confirm the specification as the basis of the quotation and the sample: the Specification Confirmation step of the fishing rod OEM process.
From specification to drawing and BOM
Once confirmed, the specification becomes two documents. The assembly drawing shows the blank with section lengths, guide positions measured from the tip, tip-top and guide sizes, reel seat position and handle layout, logo placement and finish notes. The bill of materials lists every component with series or model, size, material, colour and source: our own blanks, carbon fiber guides, titanium guides and carbon fiber reel seats, or components sourced to your specification. Both documents are revision-controlled: the sample is built to a revision, changes requested during sample development and approval become new revisions, and the approved revision is the reference for quality and inspection in bulk.
Component-only specifications
For components rather than complete rods, the same logic applies with fewer fields: for fishing rod blanks, length, sections, power, action, rating, material class, tip and butt diameter, finish and quantity; for guide sets, rod type, blank tip diameter, frame series, ring material, size per position, colour and sets required, collected on the Guide-System RFQ & Sample Approval Form described in downloads.
