Basic cleaning should be performed after every use. Remove the reel from the rod and rinse the exterior with fresh water to remove dirt and salt residue. Afterward, wipe it dry and inspect the grease on key contact surfaces, adding more if necessary.
In-depth maintenance involves servicing critical components. After cleaning the spool, inspect its bearings; if rotation is sluggish, remove and clean them with a specialized cleaner, then apply high-speed bearing oil once dry. Open the side plate to clean the gear system, removing grime and debris before applying specialized gear oil. Inspect the braking system-including centrifugal or magnetic brake weights and mechanical brake pads-and clean or replace them if worn. The line roller also requires attention; check that its bearing spins smoothly, clean away any sludge, and apply a small amount of grease.
Maintenance priorities and frequency vary by reel type. For spinning reels, focus on cleaning the spool and line lay mechanism, and check the braking system; maintenance is recommended every 5 to 10 uses. For baitcasting reels (low-profile), prioritize the brake adjustment system and ensure smooth spool rotation; maintenance is recommended every 3 to 5 uses. For round baitcasting reels (drum reels), focus on the gears and clutch system, clearing away debris promptly; maintenance is recommended every 7 to 8 uses.
Effective lubrication reduces internal wear, prevents rust and corrosion, and improves rotational smoothness. Before lubricating, clean the reel, then open the side plate and remove the spool. Apply the appropriate lubricant to key areas such as gears, bearings, and handle connection points-using a moderate amount-then rotate the reel to distribute the oil evenly and wipe away any excess.
If the reel gets wet, address it immediately. Wipe off surface moisture, remove major components like the spool and handle arm, and use a hair dryer on the cool setting to dry the interior. Finally, apply lubricant to critical parts such as gears and bearings. When the fishing reel is not in use for an extended period, perform a thorough cleaning and maintenance routine: remove the fishing line from the spool, apply anti-rust oil to components such as bearings and gears, and store the reel in a cool, dry place.
During regular use, apply consistent force when casting and retrieving the line, avoiding sudden acceleration or deceleration. Properly utilize the drag system when playing a fish, and perform a quick check before use to ensure the spool rotates smoothly and the braking system is functioning correctly.
