Fishing reels-categorized into drum reels, low-profile (baitcasting) reels, and spinning reels-are key components of casting rod setups. A reel is essentially a line-retrieval mechanism comprising eleven main parts: the handle knob, handle arm, anti-reverse switch, main body, reel foot, line roller, spool, bail nut, line clip, rotor, and drag system. The handle arm and knob allow the angler to generate power by turning them. The anti-reverse switch controls the reel’s forward and backward rotation. The bail arm guides the cast line back to the position of the bail nut. The reel foot secures the reel to the rod’s reel seat. The adjustable drag system acts as a safety mechanism; if a hooked fish struggles with excessive force, the reel automatically reverses to release line. The main body (or housing) is typically made from composite materials, nylon-glass fiber, aluminum alloy, zinc alloy, titanium alloy, or magnesium alloy. Injection-molded housings must use virgin material-specifically Nylon 6 or Nylon 66 (with the latter offering superior strength)-reinforced with 30% glass fiber to enhance durability.
The reel operates on the crankshaft transmission principle: turning the handle rotates a large planar gear (drive gear), which drives a transverse gear; this causes the spool to move back and forth in a regular pattern. Guided by the bail arm, the retrieved line is wound evenly and neatly onto the spool.
The “feel” of a reel depends on assembly consistency, whether trial assemblies are conducted before mass production, and the precision and balance of key components. All other factors being equal, a higher number of bearings generally results in a smoother feel. Some reels feature an electronically controlled drag system that uses an energized coil assembly (housed within a coil shell and disc) to generate magnetic force; this gradually engages and locks the clutch plates, ensuring smooth, fluctuation-free drag performance.
